Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s all about food, friends and family. It’s not as stressful and commercialized as Christmas and it’s an opportunity to practice gratitude.
In my family, we enjoy a classic Midwestern Thanksgiving dinner, nothing fancy, just the yummy basics, turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. I like to keep things simple, traditional and delicious.
I love spending time with my four grown children, and my extended family.
This Thanksgiving, I’m taking the time to remember and appreciate the people who’ve helped me so much along the way. I’m so thankful for each and every one of them.
We all feel alone sometimes, but almost all of us have received some support at one time or another. Taking a moment to reflect on this can help you feel more at peace during the holidays, regardless of your current circumstances.
I was very fortunate to receive a full scholarship to a private university when I was a young mother of four children.
We were quite poor, and the odds were very much against my attending college at all, much less graduating from a prestigious university. However, I was able to do so thanks to the generosity of many wonderful people.
Because of these people, my four children and I were able to escape poverty and have a better life. I’ll never be able to thank our benefactors individually, but I can pay it forward. I got a chance recently when my alma mater reached out to me and asked to tell my story. You can read it here.
I used to be ashamed of my story, my past, my so-not-the-Brady Bunch life, but I don’t feel that way anymore. I’ve started to see that my experiences have helped me to have more compassion and to be in a better position to help others.
I hope that you will embrace your story, remember those who’ve helped you, and pay it forward this Thanksgiving.
You can make a difference in the lives of others. You are loved and you matter.
